Benjamin Franklin,
An American to Admire

A simple statue, entitled The Signer, stands in a park in Philadelphia.
Benjamin Franklin edited and signed America's Declaration of Independence.
He also helped to write The Constitution of the United States of America.
He signed that important document, too!

As a writer, printer, scientist, inventor, world traveler, and statesman, Benjamin Franklin certainly made his mark on America's history.

Visitors to Philadelphia can tour a print shop that allows a peek back at the days of BFranklin, printer.
Besides his famous "Poor Richard's Almanack," Ben also published a newspaper which he delivered to the citizens of Philadelphia in a wheelbarrow.
And don't forget -- Doctor Franklin also printed money for the colonists!

The Philadelphia home of Benjamin and Deborah Franklin is no longer standing. This photograph was taken from the spot where it once stood. Walking through the archway one can walk back out onto the streets of Philadelphia. Or, one can choose to visit a nearby museum that is devoted to the life and times of Benjamin Franklin.

Look closely at the photographs below.
You will see many very old tombstones marking the gravesites of Philadelphians.
You will also see that some prominent people were buried above ground in more elaborate tombs.

Benjamin Franklin
died quietly in his sleep
at the age of 84.

During his lifetime,
Ben Franklin had some funny ideas
about what should be written on his own tombstone.

In the end,
as you can see,
his grave was marked only with his name,
the name of his wife,
and the year of his death.
