Davidsonville Elementary NewsletterFrom the Principal:
2005-2006 was an exciting year for our school. Notable highlights include special performances such as our exciting talent show, plays, and musical extravaganzas from the band, strings, and chorus. The Cultural Arts assemblies provided by PTO funding have brought entertaining learning experiences to us. The fantastic Spirit Assemblies have involved the entire school and special field trips have enhanced our learning. Our student Government is an active group with five committees that work together to plan fantastic activities each month for all students. The SGA spearheaded a wonderful Kids Helping Kids: Harvest for the Hungry Project to benefit local needy families. Hard working students and teachers weighed the many boxes and the donation to the Maryland Food Bank was impressive. Students collected over two hundred coats and $2,000.00 to make a brighter holiday season for students who attend our Adopted Sister School, Van Bokkelen Elementary. Our Safety Patrol students comprise our SGA Citizenship Committee. These remarkable children assist staff to ensure a safe and orderly arrival and dismissal. These student committees help make Davidsonville a great school. There are many enrichment opportunities at our school. PTO sponsored programs include Spanish Club, Science Fair, Chess Club, and Hands On Science. Volunteers contributed many hours of service to provide super programs such as Touchpebbles, Quick Reads, and Guest Readers. This year a special reading incentive program called The Golden Gator Club was launched. The Gator Walk, Book Fairs, and Halloween Parade are some other activities that make school fun. The Big Buddy Little Buddy Mentoring Program pairs first and fifth graders and has proven to be beneficial for all involved children. The school-wide No Putdowns Program is a series of lessons taught at every grade lelvel. This program is developed around five themes that teach children how to respond to inappropriate behavior such as bullying. This program was implemented five years ago and helps students monitor behavior as they work together. We have had a significant decline in referrals relating to bullying behavior. Thanks to the tremendous success of our "Gator Golf for Technology" fall fundraiser, which raised $27,000.00, we were able to purchase another wireless lab and printers! Talented and dedicated teachers work extrmely hard to provide enriching activities for students. Some examples are the 24 Club, Stock Market Game, and Chesapeake Connections projects. We value our students, parents, and teachers as well as our community relationships, business partnerships, and volunteer programs. Everyone contributes to making our school a great place to be. As the School Song says: DES is THE BEST!
